Problem 4.1
Use the gasoline and milage data to help settle Madelines and Luis’s argument.

Which car do you think is more fuel-efficient on the highway? Explain how you decided and why you think you are correct.

Madeline traveled 128 miles more than Luis. 580-452=128miles

Madeline used 19 gallons to travel 580 miles . 19/580=30.52 miles per gallon
She used 3.5 more gallons or 3.5X30.52=106.52 miles

Luis used 15.5 gallons to travel 452 miles . 15.5/452=29.16 miles per gallon
If Luis used 19 gallons then he would have only driven an extra 102.06 miles (3.5X29.16miles per gallon) for a total mileage of 102.06+452=554.06

Madeline’s car is more fuel efficient because of they both used 19 gallons the Madeline could drive 580 miles and Luis could only drive 554.06 on 19 gallons. Madeline got 30.52 miles per gallon and Luis got 29.16 miles per gallon.

Problem 4.1 Follow Up

Would it make sense to use percents in this argument? If so, show how; if not, explain whey.

Yes it would make sense to use percents. Madeline went 4.6% further than Luis. 25/554=4.6. 25 is how many more miles Madeline drove. 554 was Luis ‘s total milage. So 25/554=4.6. So it would make sense to use percents to help explain that Madeline drove 4.6 mor miles than Luis.
